In-House vs Outside Catering: How to Choose
One of the first questions to ask any venue is whether they provide catering or allow you to bring your own. This decision affects your budget, menu flexibility, and how much coordination work you take on.
In-House Catering
Venues with in-house catering handle all food and beverage service with their own kitchen and staff. This is standard at hotels, banquet halls, and many restaurants. The benefit is simplicity — one contract, one point of contact, and a team that knows the space intimately. The trade-off is less menu flexibility. You choose from their packages, and customization may be limited or cost extra.
Outside Catering
Venues that allow outside catering let you hire any caterer you choose. This is common at lofts, galleries, barns, community halls, and other raw or unique spaces. You get full control over the menu, dietary accommodations, and price point. However, you coordinate between the caterer and the venue yourself — delivery times, kitchen access, equipment needs, and cleanup responsibilities.
Questions to Ask
If a venue offers in-house catering, ask for a tasting before signing. Ask about dietary accommodation, portion sizes, and whether the quoted price includes service staff, bartenders, and gratuity. If the venue allows outside catering, ask about kitchen facilities, whether they charge a venue fee or per-person surcharge, and what insurance the caterer needs.
Which Is Right for You?
Choose in-house catering if you want simplicity and a proven team that works in the space regularly. Choose outside catering if you have a specific caterer in mind, need specialized cuisine, or want to control costs more tightly. For large weddings and corporate events, in-house is often easier. For intimate, creative events, outside catering gives you more freedom.
