Venue Types Explained

Choosing the right type of venue is one of the most important decisions in event planning. Each venue type has distinct advantages depending on your event size, style, and budget.

Banquet Halls and Ballrooms

Banquet halls are purpose-built for events. They typically offer in-house catering, bar service, linens, and a coordinator. They handle everything from weddings to corporate galas. Capacity ranges from 100 to 500+ guests. The trade-off is less flexibility in decor and catering choices — you work within their packages.

Hotels and Resorts

Hotel venues offer the convenience of on-site accommodations for guests, professional event staff, and multiple room options. They are ideal for multi-day events, out-of-town weddings, and corporate conferences. Expect per-person pricing with food and beverage minimums.

Restaurants and Private Dining

Restaurants with private dining rooms are perfect for intimate events — rehearsal dinners, milestone birthdays, and corporate dinners under 80 guests. The food quality is typically excellent, and you skip the complexity of hiring a separate caterer. Most charge a food and beverage minimum rather than a rental fee.

Outdoor and Garden Venues

Gardens, patios, vineyards, and rooftops offer beautiful natural settings. They work best for spring and summer events in Canada (May through September). Always have a rain plan — either a tent or an indoor backup. Outdoor venues may have noise bylaws and earlier end times.

Unique and Industrial Spaces

Lofts, art galleries, breweries, barns, and converted warehouses offer a blank canvas for creative events. You get maximum flexibility in decor and vendors but more coordination work. These venues usually allow outside catering. Budget for rentals like tables, chairs, and linens that may not be included.

Conference and Corporate Venues

Convention centres, hotel meeting rooms, and dedicated conference facilities are built for presentations, trade shows, and large corporate events. They provide AV equipment, breakout rooms, and professional support staff. Pricing is typically per day or per half-day.
